Anyone have any healthy Chaeto they are trying to get rid of? I'm interested in trying my luck with it again in my sump. Thanks!

Did i give it to you the first time?

When i got this cheato i just put it in my sump and under a light that is specifically for growing algae. Its the maxspect algae spot light, i forget the actual part number. But it has a white and a red channel, thats it. I have both turned up to 100% and have it about 8" off the water. I run it for 18 hours per day and through the night. I have a hang on the back overflow box so i cant get good flow through my sump, its extremely slow but the algae grows like crazy. But what i do is twice a day i get tongs and rotate the cheato so the light hits a different portion of the "ball" of cheato. If you dont rotate it then it will die at some point. Some people have enough flow in their sumps for it to tumble on its own.

Regarding the light, the one i have is really expensive but i have seen people go to home depot and buy a $10 light and grow it just as good. But its a specific light so research that.

No I bought it from my LFS. It never really seemed to thrive, but instead eventually broke into smaller pieces until I completely removed it. I redid my sump so now I have much more flow throughout and I'm trying to figure a new lighting option. I honestly believe my lighting choice previously was the main issue as I bought a tiny led for a fish only nano tank. I was of course told by my LFS it would be perfect for Chaeto, but that wasn't the case.

Lol ! Probably the same one I got talked into by the lfs in grafton. A little clip on piece of crap that could not grow hair algae ! Lol ! I have not had good luck lately either, so I have been doing a little research online and came up with a few things I have been doing wrong too. Hopefully it will do better.

That light was the problem for sure the problem hands down.

Take a look at these pics. This is the light i installed in the fug at my local school. They have a 120g tank. I gave them a ball of my cheato and its growing uncontrollable. You buy the light and one of the clip on light hangers with shield and your good to go.

Other people want cheato so what i have to give wont be a ton but it will grow. IMG_0184.JPG IMG_0185.JPG

They are at home depot or lowes. Any big box store. I think i paid 30-40 bucks for the light and fixture. The important thing is the 5000k color temp.

I will be at the meeting this Friday if you could bring some. I don't have any frags yet as I just set this tank up but I could toss you a few bucks. Appreciate it.

So, we might have a problem. Depends on how picky you are. I went to the school today for other reasons but i looked at the cheato. There are literally hundreds on baby snails in the sump which means its in the cheato too. If you still want it ill bring it and you can just go through the cheato and pull them out.

When i got my first ball of cheato i put a white trash bag on a table and then put the cheato on top of it. I then used tweezers to put out snails, bristleworms, anything else i didnt want. Took about a 1/2 hour to do. It was worth it because my cheato is still super clean. I used a white trash bag for contrast so i could find those things a lot faster.

So its up to you, if you want to do the work ill bring it. The problem with the snails is that i dont know if they are the good or bad kind or the kind that keep screwing like rabbits and then you could possibly end up with hundreds in your tank.

Ive had snail issues in my freshwater tank but havent really seen much on saltwater snails. is it possible to get large populations in a reef tank? my sump is in my basement with about 8 feet of vertical height. would i have to worry about them getting into my DT? i also have a 6 line and a yellow coris wrasse they will also eat the really small snails correct?

They may not be baby snails but just collinista snails. Google for an ID.

Would you be able to provide pictures of the snails? Just curious. I may still be interested, and I gotta figure lots of things would be hiding in the chaeto anyway
